A post shared on X claims that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) data does not show homicides in Los Angeles.
Verdict: False
The FBI data does include homicides in Los Angeles and New Orleans. It does not include specific data by victim or demographics.
Fact Check:
FBI data released recently shows that murder and violent crime dropped in 2023, according to NBC News. While property crime was down, motor vehicle theft and shoplifting increased, per NBC News.
Social media users are claiming that murders in Los Angeles are missing from the FBI data. One user wrote, “Wow, not a single murder in Los Angeles in 2023 according to this FBI data.” (RELATED: Media Outlets Claim Trump Falsely Accused Harris Of Wanting ‘Transgender Operations’ On Imprisoned’ Illegal Aliens’)
This claim is false. Check Your Fact reviewed the FBI Crime Data Explorer and found that Los Angeles does have murder data. There were 325 murders in 2023 and 388 in 2022.
The data, though, does not have additional information such as the demographic of victims or those who committed the crime. It also lacks characteristics and other supplemental data.
Joey Politano, a newsletter author who writes about economics, also shared the data in a reply to the user who made the claim.
The data ends in January 2024. The FBI data was last updated in April 2024, per the website.
