FACT CHECK: Image Claims To Show Tel Aviv Under Attack By Houthis

July 26th, 2024
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses a joint meeting of Congress in the chamber of the House of Representatives at the U.S. Capitol on July 24, 2024 in Washington, DC. Netanyahu’s visit occurs as the Israel-Hamas war reaches nearly ten months. A handful of Senate and House Democrats boycotted the remarks over Israel’s treatment of Palestine.

An image shared on X claims to show Tel Aviv after the Houthis attacked it.

Verdict: False

The image is from October 2023 and was taken in a different city.

Fact Check:

The Houthis chief vowed to respond to the Israeli strike on oil facilities in Hodeida, which the Israelis struck after a Houthi drone hit Tel Aviv, according to the Times of Israel. The Houthis are reportedly planning to hit Israeli sites, the outlet reported.

Social media users are claiming to show Tel Aviv after a Houthi attack. One user wrote, “TEL AVIV IS NOT A SAFE PLACE ANYMORE 🇾🇪🔥.”

This claim is false. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the image is from October 7, 2023, the day of the Hamas-led terrorist attack on Israel. It shows a location in the Israeli city of Ashkelon after a rocket hit it, according to the Times of Israel.

“A rocket fired from Gaza into southern Israel hits Ashkelon, October 7, 2023,” reads the image description. (RELATED: Did The Trump Shooter Post ‘July 13 Will Be My Premiere’ On Steam?)

Hamas terrorists reportedly were going to attempt to storm a prison near the city but got lost and ended up in Sderot, according to the Times of Israel. The terrorists killed several people in Sderot, the outlet reported.

Check Your Fact has fact-checked several images recently. For example,  Check Your Fact recently debunked an image claiming to show former President Donald Trump with a larger gut.
