FACT CHECK: Did AOC Say No Hurricanes Occurred Until Cars Were Invented?

A post shared on social media purports Democrat New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez correlated cars and hurricanes.

The claim stems from a satirical account.

Fact Check:

Ocasio-Cortez has shared criticism of the Biden Administration’s handling of immigration saying it’s their “weakest issue,” Fox News reported. Ocasio-Cortez is part of a democrat coalition pushing Biden to open work authorizations and protect migrants from deportation.

The Twitter post purports Ocasio-Cortez claimed there were no hurricanes until cars were invented. The post allegedly shares a tweet from Ocasio-Cortez stating the claim.

“Fact: There were no hurricanes before the invention of the automobile,” the alleged tweet reads. (RELATED: IS Robert J. O’Neill The Navy Seal Who Killed Osama Bin Laden?)

The post is from a satirical account. There is no credible news report that suggests this claim is authentic. The screenshot cuts off the parody label on the account. the original tweet stems from an account named, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody).”

Ocasio-Cortez’s real account features no such claim.  Likewise, There is no such claim found on the deleted tweet tracker PolitiTweet or on various archives of the account. The parody account is verified with X’s paid for blue check and features the same profile photo as Ocasio-Cortez’s actual account. This similarity has caused confusion online.

Reports have covered this account dating back to May 2023 after Elon Musk became the CEO of Twitter the platform. During his time as CEO Musk changed their verification system to be open to anyone that will pay the subscription fee.
